Many an article has been written about the pros and cons of both terrazzo and hardwood floors \u2013 but not a lot of side by side comparisons that tackle the important details like cost, durability, upkeep and general aesthetics.<\/p>\n

Making the choice between these two flooring systems also depends on other variables \u2013 if you\u2019re remodeling, starting from the ground up; the allotted budget, the availability of materials, whether you\u2019re going the DIY route or leaving it to the experts.\u00a0 To make things hopefully a little easier, here\u2019s a very basic run through of how one flooring system compares to the other.<\/p>\n

Overall Cost: Materials and Installation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
Terrazzo<\/strong><\/td>\nHardwood Floors<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Terrazzo floors cost more compared to most of the flooring systems available these days.\u00a0 This is due to the following factors:<\/p>\n
    \n
  • prior to installation, a concrete-based sub floor is required<\/li>\n
  • installation is labor-intensive, time-consuming and more often than not, a professional involvement is required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

     <\/td>\n

Compared to terrazzo floors, hardwood will definitely be the more practical choice.\u00a0 This is because:<\/p>\n
    \n
  • installation and materials are less expensive and labor intensive<\/li>\n
  • most times, DIY-ing hardwood floors can still give you great results<\/li>\n
  • any kind of sub flooring is suitable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

    Durability and Damage-Resistance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
    Terrazzo<\/strong><\/td>\nHardwood Floors<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Durability is one of the stronger selling points of terrazzo.\u00a0 Point in fact, most of the earlier terrazzo installations are still in existence today.\u00a0 This is the reason why terrazzo is the preferred flooring system when it comes to places that have higher foot traffic like airports, shopping centers, hospitals and even campus buildings.\u00a0 Additionally, terrazzo is waterproof, fireproof, scratch and impact resistant.<\/td>\nBetween the two flooring systems, hardwood doesn\u2019t even begin to match up against terrazzo.\u00a0 Hardwood is easily scuffed and scratched by shoes and heavier furniture often leaves grooves or indentations.\u00a0 Unfortunately, hardwood is not waterproof even when treated with a special sealant which is why it has a tendency to warp and rot.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

    Maintenance and Upkeep<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
    Terrazzo<\/strong><\/td>\nHardwood Floors<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Terrazzo floors do not require periodic cleaning or special cleaning solutions.\u00a0 Once installed, it takes very minimal upkeep to preserve its newly-installed look.<\/td>\nHardwood floors need to be periodically sanded and stripped.\u00a0 And to retain its newly-installed look, it needs to be completely refinished.\u00a0 This type of maintenance is very costly.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

    General Aesthetic and Design Flexibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
    Terrazzo<\/strong><\/td>\nHardwood Floors<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
