Terrazzo Precast – Elevating Timeless Design

Terrazzo Precast – Elevating Timeless Design

Terrazzo has been appreciated for thousands of years for its durability.  In its early beginnings, terrazzo has been used for more than just residential dwellings – it was also heavily used for commercial spaces, institutions, industrial settings and even places of worship and reverence.  This is because terrazzo can last as long as the structure it is installed in – sometimes, even longer.  To this day, many ancient terrazzo floors are still existing, a testament to its strength and resilience.

As the technology to improve on terrazzo’s production and installation methods levels up, more and more applications for terrazzo have been discovered.  Terrazzo can be installed in a variety of ways, with a variety of finishes and applications.  Normally, terrazzo is poured onsite or as it is more commonly referred to – terrazzo in situ.  This method of installation has been used mostly for floor installations however, because terrazzo is also known for its subtle beauty, a huge number of people started clamouring for terrazzo for other applications where doing it in situ poses a few problems.  Thus terrazzo precast was developed.

Terrazzo precast applies much of the same techniques as terrazzo in situ the difference being precast is blended and pouted into a prefabricated mould offsite.  Once the precast process is complete, the finished component is then assembled on site.  This method of installation has allowed builders and designers the flexibility to utilise terrazzo for more than just flooring systems.  These days, precast can be used for:

  • Steps and risers
  • Skirting
  • Wall panels
  • Coving
  • Benchtops and other public furniture
  • Columns

The same durable material can now be used for a wide variety of applications.  What was once mostly valued for its strength and resilience, is now also known for its virtually limitless design and application options.  And precast is easily the most customizable building material in the market today and is often used to either complement a living space or as an innovative design enhancement that turns the room into a stunning space.  More and more designers have now discovered the new dimension of terrazzo and have taken to recommend this very versatile material for not only residential builds but also commercial, industrial and institutional structures.  It is safe to say that terrazzo has come a long way from its humble beginnings and will be around long after for the future generations to appreciate its beautiful strength.
